1528-1588 Paolo Veronese Galleries Italian painter and draughtsman. With Titian and Tintoretto he makes up the triumvirate of great painters of the late Renaissance in Venice. He is known as a supreme colourist and for his illusionistic decorations in both fresco and oil. His large paintings of biblical feasts executed for the refectories of monasteries in Venice and Verona are especially celebrated. He also produced many altarpieces, history and mythological paintings and portraits. His compositional sketches in pen, ink and wash, figure studies in chalk, and chiaroscuro modelli and ricordi form a significant body of drawings. CARACCIOLO, Giovanni Battista
Italian Baroque Era Painter, ca.1578-1635 Italian painter. He was one of the greatest Caravaggesque painters and the founder of Neapolitan Caravaggism. His Liberation of St Peter (c. 1615; Naples, Pio Monte della Misericordia; ) and Christ Washing the Feet of the Disciples (1622; Naples, Certosa di S Martino; see fig. 2 below) are masterpieces of 17th-century Neapolitan art, and attain a powerful and tragic grandeur.
Alonso Vazquez
Spanish ?-1608 was a Spanish sculptor and painter of the Renaissance period. Vazquez was born in Ronda, and learned painting in the school of Arfian at Seville. He passed through the usual apprenticeship of painting "sargas" and at length painted frescoes and oil-pictures. For the Cathedral and the convents of St. Francis and St. Paul, he painted a variety of works, no longer extant. He painted a series of canvases on the life of St. Raymond, for the cloister of the friars of the order of Mercy. Vazquez was one of the artists chosen by the city of Seville to paint the great catafalque erected in the Cathedral, at the time of public mourning for the death of Philip II. He died either in Seville or in Mexico,
Joseph Anton Koch
1768-1839 Austrian Joseph Anton Koch Galleries was an Austrian painter of the German Romantic movement. The Tyrolese painter left academic training in the Karlsschule Stuttgart, a strict military academy, and traveled through France and Switzerland. He arrived in Rome in 1795. Koch was close to the painter Asmus Jacob Carstens and carried on Carstens' 'heroic' art, at first in a literal manner. After 1800 Koch developed as a landscape painter. In Rome he espoused a new type of 'heroic' landscape, revising the classical compositions of Poussin and Lorrain with a more rugged, mountainous scenery. He left Rome in 1812 and stayed in Vienna until 1815, in protest of the French invasion. During this period he incorporated more non-classical themes in his work. In Vienna he was influenced by Friedrich Schlegel and enthusiasts of old German art. In response, his style became harsher, and this new approach had a wide influence on German landscape painters who visited Rome.
